Visiting a Wassenaar craftsman: a behind-the-scenes look at Chris Theil's work

At Windlustweg 7 is a store with character, history and craftsmanship: Chris Theil Lederwaren. Last month, Alderman Laurens van Doeveren, along with two business contact officers from Wassenaar municipality, visited this special business. The visit is part of a series of meetings with local entrepreneurs, designed to strengthen ties and gain insight into the opportunities and challenges of the local business community.

Family business

Chris Theil Leather Goods is not an average store, this business breathes craftsmanship. Bags, suitcases and backpacks have been sold here since 1961. At the back of the store is an artisan workshop, where Chris expertly repairs leather shoes and leather goods. The shoe repair shop itself dates back to 1929, when it was still located on Kerkstraat. A family business with deep roots in Wassenaar, where owner Chris Theil continues the craft of his parents and grandfather with pride and passion.

Double milestone

During the visit, Chris spoke candidly about his personal journey. He once dreamed of a career as a professional soccer player with R.K.S.V. Blauw-Zwart, but an injury threw a spanner in the works. He eventually found his calling in the family business, where he learned the craft of shoe and leather repair. In four years time he will celebrate a double milestone: the company will be 100 years old and Chris will reach retirement age.

Offer

Luxury suitcases, stylish bags (briefcases, laptop bags and women's bags) and practical backpacks fill the shelves. Chris moves with the times and also knows how to reach his customers online. With his webshop, he makes the assortment accessible to a wider audience.

Alderman Van Doeveren expressed his appreciation: "Chris is a wonderful example of how craftsmanship, entrepreneurship and local involvement come together. His story and commitment fit perfectly with the direction we want to take with our economic vision: giving space to local entrepreneurs and building a future-proof Wassenaar together."
