Privacy Statement
The Municipality of Wassenaar has a lot of information from its residents. It handles your information with care. The municipality uses your personal data, for example, when you apply to the municipality for Health, support, debt assistance or other services. This also applies when you apply for Social assistance benefit or a license, for example. How the municipality handles your personal data is largely governed by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Below you will find more information on exactly how the municipality does this.
Processing of personal data
The municipality uses your data as necessary to perform its public duty or legal obligation.
- What data the municipality uses from you often depends on the services you use.
- The law defines the duties of the municipality. Thus, it may not use your data just because it is convenient.
- Sometimes the municipality processes your data because the law requires it. In these cases, the municipality has little choice.
Specific processing operations
- The municipality wants to perform its duties well. To know what can be improved, the municipality uses information from residents for research. Health is taken care that research results cannot be traced back to individual persons.
- The Municipality of Wassenaar uses cookies on its website www.wassenaar.nl. The municipality only uses cookies to make the website work properly and to collect statistics about the website. The programs SIM Analytics and SiteImprove Analytics are used for this purpose.
- The municipality is sometimes required by law to provide information from the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP) to third parties. If you do not want your information from the BRP to be provided, you can request partial confidentiality.
- When processing data, the municipality does not use profiling or automated decision-making without human intervention.
Principles of personal data processing
When processing your personal data, the municipality adheres to the basic principles required by the AVG. The Municipality of Wassenaar:
- processes personal data lawfully, transparently and on an AVG legal basis;
- collects and uses personal information only for a specific and clearly defined purpose and uses it only for the purpose for which it was collected;
- processes only the personal data necessary for the purpose;
- bears Health to ensure that the personal data is correct and accurate and updated as necessary;
- Does not retain personal information longer than necessary or permitted by law;
- takes appropriate organizational and technical security measures to protect your personal data.
Data controllers
The municipality has three governing bodies responsible for processing personal data:
- the mayor is responsible for all data processing related to his security duties;
- the City Council is responsible for processing by the Municipal Clerk’s Office and the council;
- the College of Mayor and Aldermen is responsible for all other data processing.
Collaborate
The municipality sometimes works with other parties to provide certain services to you. This may require sharing your information with these parties.
- The municipality always enters into a specific agreement with organizations that process your data on behalf of the municipality. This includes an agreement that this third party maintains the same level of security and confidentiality as the municipality.
- The municipality remains the (ultimately) responsible for the careful handling of your data.
Retention periods
How long the municipality retains your data varies by process. In determining retention periods, the municipality usually uses the Selection List of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG). This states:
- How long the municipality must retain information;
- Which information must be destroyed after a certain time, and;
- What information the municipality must archive.
Your rights
According to the AVG, as a data subject, you have a number of rights regarding your personal data.
You have the following rights that you can request through the Privacy (AVG) Contact form:
- The right to access your data known to the municipality. Be sure to clearly describe what you are looking for in this request so that you can be assisted properly. Requests for inspection that are too general may be rejected by the municipality;
- The right to have your data corrected, supplemented or blocked;
- The right to have your data deleted if the municipality has no good reason to continue using the data;
- The right to object to the use of your personal data.
The municipality will process your request to exercise these rights within one month. In exceptional cases, this handling period may be extended by up to two months. The municipality will notify you in advance.
- To be sure that you are exercising your rights yourself and not someone else, the municipality requests that you identify yourself via DigiD.
- It has been agreed with the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg that they will handle all tasks related to work, income and debts for the residents of the municipality of Wassenaar. For these matters, you make a request for the aforementioned AVG rights to the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg. They will process your request. You can submit your request via the contact form of the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg.
Report data breach
- A data breach occurs when someone has access to personal data without permission or intent. The unwanted destruction, loss, alteration, or disclosure of personal data is also referred to as a data breach.
- Should you discover that your data or that of another person processed by the Municipality of Wassenaar is involved in a data breach, please report it immediately to fg@wassenaar.nl.

- When a data breach is reported, the municipality immediately initiates an investigation. If this is indeed the case, the municipality usually informs the resident(s) involved.
- In the event of a serious data breach, the municipality also notifies the Personal Data Authority.
Questions or complaints
- If you have questions about the protection of your personal information, please contact the municipality through our contact page.
- If you have a complaint about the processing of your personal data, you can fill out themunicipality's complaint form. The municipality will then handle your complaint.
- You can also contact our municipality's Data Protection Officer (FG) directly for a complaint by emailing fg@wassenaar.nl. This officer oversees the protection of your personal data internally and has an independent position within the municipality.
