College visiting field staff: proud of our clean and green community

Wassenaar's outdoor areas are the calling card of our municipality, and we work hard every day to make sure they do. Some 36 field service employees ensure that streets, parks and squares look neat and tidy.

To see what is involved, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen recently visited the field service employees. During the visit, the field service showed how they make a daily difference, for example, between a street that has already been brushed and swept, and one that still needs to be done. That difference is very clearly visible!

The external service works on a district basis throughout Wassenaar. This means that one district is very tidy, while in another district the weeds are already starting to grow again. And that is not unwillingness: since municipalities are no longer allowed to use chemicals, the weeds grow back faster. Especially after a period of rain and warm weather, it shoots out of the ground.

The growing period of weeds runs from May through October. During those months, employees keep the greenery under control as best they can: they mow, brush and sweep, but removing the roots is a lot harder. As a result, weeds sometimes grow back faster. Despite that challenge, the field staff remains fully committed every day to a neat, green and pleasant living environment. And the college is very proud of that.
