A green ode to Wassenaar in our renovated center

While the redevelopment of the center is in full swing, new bins are being bricked. They are waiting for the right planting moment to be filled with greenery that reinforces Wassenaar's identity. Because behind every plant, tree and shrub in the renewed center is a thought. It is a thoughtful translation of the character of Wassenaar that reflects the unique charm of our village.

The dune vegetation gives substance to the concept of "Estate by the Sea," giving the center a unique appearance.

Inspiration

The overarching theme "Estate by the Sea" is derived from the structural vision, which positions Wassenaar as a green and vital municipality that cherishes tranquility, nature and heritage. That unique combination has been the inspiration for the entire design of the new center.

Those who will soon walk past the new planting will recognize it immediately: this is Wassenaar. The oaks, pines and currant trees are reminiscent of the estates and dune edges. Lime trees refer to the village character of Wassenaar. And the flowery perennials and ornamental grasses evoke the feeling of the adjacent dune area. Dry, sandy, natural. But also cozy and lively, just like the center itself.

Old and new

The center remains connected to its past by preserving some of the original trees in the center. Plane and linden trees have been pruned so that they can last for years and cope with the changes around their roots. Unfortunately, some trees could not be preserved and were removed or transplanted because of root problems, location near pipes or because they did not fit in with the new design. But new species are being added. Oaks, pines, honey trees and even cherry trees, which enhance biodiversity and add something special in every season.

Atmosphere with Hague School details

The new trees, plants and ornamental grasses will have a place in traditional masonry containers. These iconic 'stepping stones' connect the Langstraat with the Van Hogendorpstraat and the Luifelbaan. The containers are made of glazed brick and refer to the Hague School architecture, characteristic of the center of Wassenaar. In this style, glazed accents recur regularly. The bins will also have wooden seating elements, so you can take a break, eat an ice cream or engage in conversation. A subtle addition that contributes to the village atmosphere of the center.

Heat stress and water collection

The center will have more trees than before, fulfilling the so-called 3-30-300 rule: view of 3 trees from every house, 30% shade on the street and access to greenery within 300 meters. Additional shade from the trees and the new fountain will soon provide more cooling on hot days. For stormwater runoff, the sewer system will be expanded with a separate stormwater drain. Thanks to the permeable sandy soil, the center is already naturally resistant to heavy rainfall. Additional measures such as underground water storage were not necessary.

The green design does more than just beautify the center. It is part of the renewal that prepares the Wassenaar village center for the future. The character of the village will be preserved while the surroundings renew themselves. So look closely at those empty bins this summer. Because soon they will tell a green story. The story of Wassenaar.
