Revitalization of The Wassenaar Slag launched: preserving and strengthening family beach
The municipality of Wassenaar is taking an important step towards an attractive family beach. On Monday, November 3, work will begin, giving concrete substance to the Vision for De Wassenaarse Slag, as established in March 2025. The redevelopment will take place in phases, working step by step on a beach that invites, connects and is ready for the future.
Attention to a valuable beach
With this project, the municipality is tackling overdue maintenance and giving De Wassenaarse Slag the attention it deserves. The municipality wants to preserve and strengthen the unique character of the family beach: a place where recreation, conviviality and nature experience come together. After completion, De Wassenaarse Slag will be responsibly redesigned and equipped with free guarded bicycle storage, basic facilities such as toilets and showers, wheelchair-friendly paths and safe beach entrances.
Meeting place
A green dune square forms a meeting place that enhances the experience of nature in Meijendel and Berkheide. With play and sports facilities and a kiosk open all year round, the square provides space for relaxation and activity. It also serves as a starting point for walks along the beach and through the dunes, with clear and marked routes for young and old.
Upcoming work
Work is scheduled from Nov. 3, 2025, to Feb. 1, 2026. Starting Oct. 30, preparatory work, such as removal of bike racks, will be performed. To make room for the new dune square, the traffic circle will be moved and redesigned. The road section between parking area De Kuil and the beach will be asphalted and the footpath along the road to the traffic circle will be extended. The beach will remain accessible on foot at all times during the work. During the conversion of the traffic circle a detour route will be set up for the accessibility of parking lot Zeelust and Brasserie de Badmeester. The work will be carried out in cooperation with, among others, contractor D. van der Steen.
Laurens van Doeveren, Alderman Economic Affairs: "With this revitalization, we are investing in our beloved family beach, which will become an accessible place where nature and recreation are in balance and which invites to visit all year round. The Wassenaarse Slag will get a quality boost. We are therefore delighted that the work will start, so that we can make the beach vision a reality."
Phased implementation
To minimize inconvenience to business owners and visitors, the work will take place during the winter months, when there is also no beach hospitality. In this way, the beach remains easily accessible during the busy spring and summer periods. To carry out the project carefully, a phased approach over several years was chosen. Phase one, as described above, will take place this winter. In the winter of 2026-2027, the design of the new dune square and the redesign of the beach entrance are scheduled to take place. In the winter of 2027-2028, a full-scale bicycle parking facility will be constructed at Zeelust. Subsequently, the parking lots Zeelust and De Kuil will be redesigned and asphalted.
