From April 1: no Yes-Yes sticker, no unaddressed advertising in your mailbox
From April 1, 2025, residents of Wassenaar can choose whether they want to receive unaddressed advertising material. With a Yes-Yes sticker on your mailbox you let it be known that you would like to be kept informed of the latest offers and promotions. Without this sticker, your mailbox remains free of unaddressed advertising. In this way, you have control over what you receive and contribute to a more sustainable environment.
Even after April 1, residents will continue to receive their familiar door-to-door newspapers. Would you also like to continue receiving unaddressed advertising material? That is of course possible. With the Yes-Yes sticker on your mailbox you indicate this.
As of April 1, what will residents receive in their mailboxes with each sticker?
- Yes-Yes sticker: Residents with a Yes-Yes sticker receive both unaddressed advertising and door-to-door newspapers.
- No-No sticker: Residents with a No-No sticker do not receive unaddressed advertising and free local newspapers.
- No sticker or No-Yes sticker: Residents without a sticker or with a No-Yes sticker only receive door-to-door newspapers. As of April 1, unaddressed printed advertising may only be delivered with a Yes-Yes sticker. This makes the No-Yes sticker obsolete and residents can remove it.
The stickers can be ordered free online at the website or picked up free of charge at the reception desk of the municipal office, Johan de Wittstraat 45, Wassenaar.
Fewer leaflets is better for the environment
Research by Milieu Centraal shows that paper advertising brochures make up a significant portion of paper waste. Paper cannot be recycled endlessly, and printing ink, packaging plastic and transport burden the environment. Preventing (paper) waste is therefore more sustainable than separating and recycling. Moreover, paper leaflets often end up unread in the paper bin or, even worse, with the residual waste.
In order to reduce this environmental burden, the City Council has decided that, starting in April, residents of Wassenaar will choose for themselves whether they want to receive unaddressed advertising material. With this, Wassenaar follows the successful example of other cities such as Leiden, The Hague and Katwijk.
Laurens van Doeveren, Alderman Finance, Economy and Sports, says: "Everyone knows it: after your vacation there is a pile of old paper in your mailbox. Many Wassenaarders receive a pile of leaflets and flyers every week that they did not ask for. This is a waste of all the paper and the trees that are cut down for it. Starting in April, everyone will have control over their own mailbox."
Online viewing of print materials
Many leaflets can be viewed digitally. There is an overview on the Milieu Centraal website. You can also read the Wassenaarse Krant digitally.
Custom advertising printing
Via kiesjefolders.nl it is possible to put together a leaflet package containing only the desired advertising leaflets. This package is sent as addressed mail, regardless of any stickers on the mailbox.
No advertising
Printed matter from political parties and non-profit organizations is not considered advertising in our municipality and is therefore allowed in the mailbox, even with a No-No sticker.
