April 15: Bicycle Helmet Day
This coming Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the national “Zet ’m op!” campaign kicks off once again, drawing extra attention to the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet through the end of May. Cycling is hugely popular in the Netherlands—and in Wassenaar as well—and that’s something to be happy about. At the same time, cyclists are vulnerable in traffic, for example in the event of a fall or a collision with another bicycle, a tree, or a car.

It also reduces the risk of serious injury by about 60%. The risk of fatal head or brain injuries is reduced by as much as 70%. That’s reason enough to wear a helmet more often.
Wim Koetsier, Alderman :“More and morepeople are choosing to wear a bicycle helmet, and that is a positive development. In Wassenaar, we are constantly working to create a safer traffic environment. For example, the speed limit throughout the village was recently lowered to 30 km per hour, which contributes to greater safety for all road users. At the same time, cyclists themselves can also take an important step by wearing a helmet and always making eye contact with oncoming traffic. This way, we work together to ensure safer traffic and make sure everyone gets home safely.”
