March 24 safety inspection for anyone who feels unsafe on the streets
Public spaces should be safe and accessible to everyone. However, various studies show that (young) women, among others, are more likely to feel unsafe on the streets. They sometimes avoid certain routes or adjust their behavior to feel safer.
The municipality of Wassenaar wants to better understand these experiences and encourage open discussion about them. That is why the municipality is organizing a safety tour on Tuesday, March 24, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. During this evening, we will cycle together past areas where residents sometimes feel less safe.
Exploring unsafe places together
During the safety walk, residents and professionals—such as police officers and city officials—will walk together through the municipality to see where people feel safe or unsafe and why. We specifically want to hear from young women, LGBTIQA+ individuals, and other residents who are concerned about safety in their neighborhood. Everyone is welcome to sign up.
Unsafe locations can be reported via the survey "Survey on (Social) Safety in the Municipality of Wassenaar" at . A selection of these locations will form the basis for the inspection route.
Purpose of the safety inspection
By gathering residents’ experiences and fostering open discussion, the municipality aims to foster greater mutual understanding among residents, officials, and professionals. The goal is to gain insight into how public spaces are experienced. While not all physical measures can be implemented immediately, the feedback and suggestions from the safety inspection are taken seriously and, where possible, incorporated into future plans for public spaces.
