Wassenaar municipality signs new Coastal Pact: balance between nature and recreation
The municipality of Wassenaar, together with other coastal municipalities, provinces, the State and civil society organizations, symbolically signed the new Coastal Pact 2026-2030. This took place on October 1 during the Dutch Coastal Days in Noordwijk. Alderman Finance, Economy and Sport, Laurens van Doeveren, attended the festive signing ceremony on behalf of Wassenaar.

What does this mean for Wassenaar?
By participating in the Coastal Pact, our village can also influence broader developments, such as tourism, nature conservation and spatial plans that affect the entire coastal region. In this way, we ensure that the interests of Wassenaar and its residents are included in national agreements. The municipality is committed to a safe, healthy and attractive coast for Wassenaar residents and guests.
What the Coastal Pact does
Tourism and recreation on the coast are increasing, and that growth is expected to continue. This provides opportunities for coastal towns, but also puts more pressure on nature, landscape and habitat.

The Coastal Pact is a collaboration between governments, social organizations and entrepreneurs to manage that growth. It focuses on tourism, recreational pressure and the economy around the beach, with an eye to preserving core qualities and the quality of the living environment.
In addition, the Coastal Pact provides a platform where the parties involved can share information at an early stage and discuss opportunities, concerns and areas for attention. Together they can keep track of developments and work towards a balanced future for the coastal region.
The new Coastal Pact will enter into force on January 1, 2026 and will be published online this fall.
