The Municipality of Wassenaar Speaks Out Against Cigarette Filters
Starting this month, the Municipality of Wassenaar is joining the No Plastic Filter campaign with the goal of securing a European ban on cigarette filters.
In the Netherlands, approximately 1 billion cigarette butts end up in public spaces every year. This is the most common form of litter. Cigarette filters contain plastic and toxic substances that are harmful to soil, water, and animals.Alderman
Alderman Koetsier and Council Member Maria Bellekom-Vogels explain the signing: “With this, the municipality is sending a clear signal to the national government and Europe that municipalities no longer accept polluting cigarette filters. A ban on cigarette filters contributes to a cleaner living environment, cleaner water, lower cleanup costs, and a healthier future”.
