Successful 'Dementia-Friendly Community' Training for Firefighters and Police

On Monday, March 23, firefighters and community police officers in Wassenaar attended a training session titled “Dealing Effectively with Dementia.” This was an important step, as emergency services regularly come into contact with people with dementia, for example in cases of missing persons or situations involving potential fraud.

During the training, participants learn to better recognize the signs of dementia and how to communicate in a calm and appropriate manner. This enables them to provide assistance more quickly and with greater respect for human dignity in sensitive situations.

Working Together to Make Wassenaar Dementia-Friendly

A dementia-friendly municipality is one that designs its policies, services, and public spaces in such a way that people with dementia can participate in society safely, independently, and with dignity for as long as possible. This requires collaboration between the municipality, healthcare organizations, emergency services, and residents. As a municipality, we consider this important and are actively working toward it. This training is another step toward earning the dementia-friendly municipality certification.

With greater understanding and knowledge, we can prevent misunderstandings and improve safety for both residents and first responders.

Thank you to all participants for their hard work!
