Restoration of Wittenburg estate
Gemeente Wassenaar is carrying out work in the park of country estate De Wittenburg. These measures are dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the historic country estate De Wittenburg.
Historic buitenplaats
Every estate in Wassenaar - including De Wittenburg - has a special history behind it. This makes these estates different from other hiking areas. And therefore unique and valuable to this area. The goal is to preserve these estates in good condition. By eliminating overdue maintenance, we make the historic structures and construction of the monumental park more visible and experienceable again. So that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy visiting our parks. It is also important for nature to keep the estates 'healthy'. For example, by giving space to the image-defining trees by pruning and removing dominant plants. In addition, various trees and shrubs will be planted to improve natural and cultural values. This will provide a more varied image of colors and varying heights, in keeping with the park's construction.

The historical country estate De Wittenburg is characterized by a garden and park layout that we are implementing in parts. This garden and park layout has high cultural and garden-historical value due to the combination of the landscape and mixed garden style. Among other things - by the oeuvre of garden architects Copijn and Springer and by the image-defining ensemble value. This makes the estate an important part of the estates zone in Wassenaar.
The work
The work will be prepared and carried out in two phases. The first phase involves preparation for rehabilitation of various objects. The work is currently being prepared, with work on the first phase expected to begin in the fall of 2024.
After the first phase is completed, further landscaping of the estate with trees, (ornamental) shrubs and forest plants will follow. For example, a few avenues and groups of trees will be restored. Park woods and other forest structures will also be decorated. This will be done with trees and shrubs that in terms of leaf shape, leaf color or inflorescence match the trees and shrubs present in this special cultural landscape.
Restoring estates
The restoration of the park is part of a project to refurbish all municipal parks in the estates zone. These plans have come about with the advice of, among others, the Committee for Welfare and Cultural Heritage and the National Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE). From the Erfgoedtafel Landgoederen, the Province of South Holland is financially supporting the measures.
