Financial Statements 2021

2021 was the year when Wassenaar was undergoing major rebuilding, metaphorically speaking. The cooperation with the municipality of Voorschoten came to an end and on September 1, 2021, Wassenaar's new, own organization was a fact. A whole new organization was built in a short time, while in the meantime the "normal" work went on. This is an achievement to be proud of. Especially since it happened against the backdrop of corona. At the same time, the municipality of Wassenaar managed to stay on course socially and financially. Many results were achieved while also keeping the household book in order.

This is also the picture over the entire governance period of the past four years, which concluded with the elections in March 2022. The goals that were included in the coalition agreement have largely been achieved. Special attention was paid to five major projects: the reorientation of the Warenar complex, construction of the new sports hall, renovation of the Paauw, repositioning of Avalex and the unbundling of the official cooperation with Voorschoten. In these, substantial results have been achieved that benefit the entire municipality. That this was done with a financially stable outcome means that the new council and the new college can build on the foundation laid over the past four years.

Financial Statements

The Annual Accounts reflect on the results achieved in 2021 and the expenditures made by the municipality for that purpose. At the July 5, 2022 council meeting, the (new) City Council will discuss the Annual Accounts. Great results were achieved in 2021. For example, Wassenaar's new, in-house civil service organization was launched, the Regional Energy Strategy was adopted, the construction of the new, modern gymnasium on Burmanlaan began, and the Bicycle Safety Plan was adopted and (partially) implemented. These achievements are just a sampling of what else has been accomplished in 2021.

Wassenaar 2030

The work done in 2021 is aimed at keeping Wassenaar future-proof. This way we will remain a pleasant municipality to live in in the future. With lots of greenery, good facilities and a stable financial position. This gives us the opportunity to look ahead, towards the goals we have set for "Wassenaar 2030": In the municipality of Wassenaar, we work with each other to create a safe, green and international village, which is on the move, where we build a solid foundation, which is sustainable and future-proof, where we think in terms of possibilities and where everyone participates.

New in-house civil service organization

For Wassenaar, 2021 not only marked corona, it was also the year we got back to work with our own civil service organization. Starting in 2013, the municipalities of Wassenaar and Voorschoten worked together administratively in the Werkorganisatie Duivenvoorde (WODV). Midway through 2020, however, it became apparent that this collaboration no longer offered the desired added value for both municipalities. It was therefore decided to bring the execution of most tasks "back to the municipality. As of September 1, 2021, the new, own official organization of the municipality of Wassenaar started. With a new organizational structure and culture, the organization is committed to performing municipal tasks in the best possible way for the residents of Wassenaar. Task-oriented, data-driven, collaborative, inclusive and with participation of residents: these are core values that define the work of the new organization.

Household book in order

A positive result of €2,090,000 was recorded for 2021.

Alderman Hubert Schokker on this result: "The Annual Accounts show that Wassenaar has its household finances in good order. That is not a given. There are many municipalities struggling with financial problems. This is due, among other things, to the rising costs of youth care and the Wmo. Wassenaar, too, has to deal with this. However, the college and council of Wassenaar have been able to make sharp choices in time that benefit the entire municipality. In this way, we have been able to lay a stable financial foundation for the new administrative period."
