Can there be speed enforcement on my street where the speed limit is 30 mph?

Speed enforcement is not a competence of the municipality but of the police. Speed checks on roads within 30-km zones are not a priority for the police and the public prosecutor. To determine whether speeding occurs structurally somewhere, the so-called 85 percentile is used. The 85 percentile is a speed value derived from speed measurements. 85% of road users drive this speed or slower. If this value is high above the speed limit, the municipality notifies the police. They then determine whether to proceed with enforcement.

If the 85 percentile is slightly above the speed limit, this value, while above the maximum speed allowed, is lower than the corrections the police must take into account in order to be allowed to enforce.
