Pupil transport is support from the municipality to bring your child from home to school. The municipality decides whether you will receive pupil transport.

Pupil transport is for children in (special) primary and secondary special education. The Leiden region cooperation body refers your child to another (special) school because of, for example, learning problems or a disability. To be eligible for pupil transport compensation, you choose the school closest to you.

In the event that you do not choose the nearest school, due to valid reasons, the reimbursement of pupil transportation will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

When can I apply for pupil transportation?

  • If your child cannot travel to school independently due to a disability or impairment.
  • If the nearest accessible school is far from your home.
  • If the nearest accessible school of your philosophy of life is far from your home.
  • The distance between your child's home address and the school is more than 6 kilometers.
  • This is transportation between your child's home and the nearest accessible school.

Please note that at secondary school, your child can use pupil transportation only if the need is medically determined and your child cannot travel independently.

Applying for pupil transportation

Health ensure that you submit a completed application by May 1 for the upcoming school year. If you submit your application in July or August, we cannot guarantee that your child will be able to use adapted transportation during the first three weeks of the new school year. This is because route planning is made starting in July and cannot be adjusted again until after the second week of September. Unfortunately, until you are notified of the start date, you must provide your own alternative. After the application, you will receive a letter from the municipality with the decision within 8-12 weeks.
