Go on vacation with peace of mind—leave your home in safe hands
Summer vacation is just around the corner. Maybe you’re planning a fun trip or looking forward to a relaxing break away from home. Unfortunately, during vacation periods, burglars are more likely to target homes that appear to be unoccupied. With a few simple precautions, you can go a long way toward keeping your home safe while you’re away.
So, for example, ask your neighbors to keep an eye on things and regularly move the mail out of sight or park a car in the driveway every now and then. A timer switch for the lights can also help make your home look lived-in.
Don't let others know on social media when you're away—for example, by posting photos while you're on vacation. That way, others won't be able to tell that your home is temporarily empty.
Seal it tightly
When the weather is warm, people are more likely to leave windows and doors ajar. This makes it easy for intruders to get inside. Always close all windows and doors when you leave your home—even if you don’t live on the ground floor. Be sure to also check the back door, garage, shed, and any other outbuildings.
Something Suspicious
If you witness a home burglary or notice anything suspicious on the street, call the police immediately at 0900 – 8844, or 112 in an emergency. Take a good look at the suspect(s). Note details such as hairstyle and build, as well as the license plate number and color of any vehicle. You can also report a crime anonymously by calling 0800 – 7000.
