Private rental abuses

The Good Landlord Act addresses a couple of major problems in the private rental market. First, the law aims to prevent and stop discrimination and harassment. Landlords are also required to prepare a written lease. And they must inform tenants of their rights and obligations, a maintenance plan must be in place and the rent must not be too high. In addition, labor contract and rental contract must now be separated. This will make migrant workers less dependent on their employer.

More information about this law can be found at Staatsblad 2023, 103 | Overheid.nl > Official Notices (officielebekendmakingen.nl)

How does it work?

The municipality has set up a "Private Rental Abuse Reporting Point. Here tenants can report complaints about undesirable situations or undesirable behavior by their landlord. The municipality supports and informs tenants. In consultation with the tenant, it addresses the landlord or landlord if necessary.
