Objects with monumental status

Here you can see which properties in Wassenaar have monumental status. Is your property listed here? Then it is important to know exactly what status your property has. There are three forms: national monuments, municipal monuments and image-defining objects.

National Monuments

National monuments are buildings, objects or parks, which are of general interest on a national level because of its beauty, significance for science and/or cultural-historical value. The aim is to maintain their monumental value. These can be buildings, such as a house, church or mill, but also a memorial monument, archaeological sites, parks or country estates can be protected by the State.

Wassenaar has 385 national monuments, which are of national value because of their age, (building) history, architecture, urban cohesion or rarity.

You can view the descriptions through the National Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) website. In it you can search by address or by monument or complex number.

Municipal monuments

The Heritage Vision shows that Wassenaar is rich in Cultural Heritage. It is important that the most valuable objects for the municipality are protected as municipal monuments. This is heritage that has especially local historical value. Wassenaar has 127 municipal monuments.

Iconic objects

A third category of valuable heritage is image-defining objects. They are protected through the umbrella zoning plan Cultural Heritage Wassenaar, buildings and objects and archaeological heritage (2016). These properties contribute to the character of Wassenaar. The protective rules see to the preservation of that characteristic.

List of iconic objects and descriptions

The reasoning descriptions of image-defining objects with high and very high cultural-historical values have been added to the Handboek welstand. When you come to this site, choose 'Search in list of plans' and then choose 'Welstandsnota 2012'.
