Dealing with loss and grief
When you lose something or someone, it can cause a lot of grief. You must learn to deal with the loss itself and the mourning that comes afterwards. The Wassenaar Social Team can tell you what support or help is available if you get stuck in your emotions.
What is the difference between loss and grief?
Loss and grief are different things:
- Loss is the feeling that you have lost something or someone. Such as a loved one, a job, your health or a friendship or relationship.
- Grief consists of your reaction to that loss, for example, your emotions and behavior. Think of denying the loss, being angry or sad, being gloomy or anxious.
Who can help you?
Social workers can help you cope with loss and grief:
- They listen to you when you are struggling.
- They can help you look at loss in a different way.
- They can help you take care of things. Like how to get everything right with money and administration.
- They help you grieve properly so you can look to the future again with energy and confidence.
A social worker can also advise you about more or different support or help. For example, about social workers who know a lot about loss and grief. Or about support groups where you can talk with people going through the same thing.
