Eviction of national monument Huize Ivicke after occupation by squatters in Wassenaar
The national monument Huize Ivicke in Wassenaar was squatted by 33 persons on Saturday, October 4, at around 3:00 p.m.. After discovering the squatting in the act, after consultation between police, mayor and Public Prosecutor, it was decided to evacuate the building immediately. The mayor issued an emergency order for this purpose. Due to a large deployment of the police, the squatters were removed from the building and taken away in buses. A total of 33 arrests were made.
Collaboration and scaling up
Because of the size of the occupancy of Huize Ivicke and the risks to public order and safety, it was scaled up in close cooperation with the police. Additional police units were deployed to keep the situation under control and ensure the evacuation proceeded in an orderly manner.
Follow-up steps and prevention
In consultation with the owner of Huize Ivicke, additional measures are being considered to prevent the recurrence of such situations. The municipality and police remain alert. It is up to the owner to take preventive measures to better protect the property from unwanted intruders, for example by improving security and identifying suspicious situations more quickly.
Mayor Leendert de Lange: "By timely scaling up and a skilled deployment of the police, the squatters were quickly removed again. Squatting is punishable and is not tolerated in Wassenaar either. We will always take strict action against this. It is up to the owner of the national monument Huize Ivicke to prevent squatting in the future by quickly refurbishing this unique building and putting it back into use. The mayor expresses his great appreciation for the commitment and professionalism of the police and fire department during the evacuation of Huize Ivicke."
