Toward a green future

We are proud of Wassenaar as a green municipality. To provide a green future for our children as well, it is important to cherish our environment. The truth is simple: if we want to sustain life on earth, we must take action. Waste separation is one example. Waste is the raw material of the future.
Waste now often gets lost in landfills. We literally throw away our resources. Moreover, we humans are creatures of habit and do not want to radically change our way of life. Fortunately, that is not necessary at all. With just a few small adjustments, you can make a big contribution.

What can I do?
Deliver your waste separately as much as possible. But does source separation (separating waste at home) make sense? Yes it does! When people separate waste at home, organic waste, food waste and paper are well separated. Not all types of waste can be separated by post-separation. Plastic packaging, cans and empty drinking cartons are separated from residual waste. Other valuable waste streams such as organic waste, textiles and paper/cardboard are lost. The waste that residents separate is also easier to recycle. In addition, a separation plant is a more expensive solution than separating waste at home via containers. If you add to this the fact that the government keeps increasing the tax on incinerating residual waste, separating waste is smart for both environment and wallet.
With ease in the right bin
It seems simple "separate waste," yet we can imagine there are questions. For example, can the lid of your applesauce jar go in the glass container? Are food scraps now allowed in the GFT container? The answer to both questions is 'yes'. On the Avalex website you can find more information about waste separation and which products belong in which container. You can also read what happens to the waste as raw material for new products. The Wassenaarse Krant also includes a sticker (What belongs where?), handy for your container or meter cupboard. All about paper 'Holle Bolle Gijs has been saying it for years: paper here! And that's just the way it is. Wassenaar citizens use an average of eighty kilos of paper per year. Whether it is a magazine or a cardboard box: you save valuable raw materials by using less paper and by offering paper separately.' Read all about paper collection.
