Renovation and restoration of De Paauw Town Hall set to begin

The municipality of Wassenaar is on the verge of renovating and restoring De Paauw Town Hall. To make this extensive and meticulous project possible, the municipal executive, the city council, and the municipal administration will be leaving the historic town hall and will be temporarily relocated elsewhere.

Relocation of the municipal administration, executive branch, and city council

Effective May 1, 2026, Wassenaar municipal employees will move from De Paauw Town Hall to the municipal office at 45 Johan de Wittstraat. This also applies to the Mayor and Aldermen and the Municipal Clerk’s Office. Starting on that date, all daily operations will take place there, and the municipal office will serve as the central point of contact for residents seeking municipal services. During the renovation period, the City Council will meet at the police station in Wassenaar. The City Council will meet one last time at Raadhuis De Paauw on May 12; thereafter, starting with the committee meetings on May 18, meetings will take place at the new location.

Renovation and restoration work

In the coming period, the building will be further cleared out and prepared for construction. The European tender for the renovation and restoration work is currently in its final phase. The contract is expected to be awarded to a contractor before the summer recess. Work can then begin.

The work will focus, among other things, on the careful restoration of the historic interior, the upgrading of the building’s technical systems, and ensuring the building is ready for the future. This will preserve De Paauw Town Hall as a representative, functional, and sustainable administrative center. Through this renovation project, the municipality is investing in the preservation of an important part of Wassenaar’s heritage and identity for current and future generations.

Alderman van Doeveren on the future of City Hall: “Renovation has been urgently needed for years, and now we’re moving forward. City Hall De Paauw is an icon of Wassenaar, and with the upcoming renovation, we’re taking an important step toward preparing this national monument for the future. The temporary relocation requires flexibility from our organization, but it is essential so that we can eventually return to a modern and welcoming town hall that retains its historical value and is put to better use.”

City Hall is closed to the public

With the relocation of the municipal administration, De Paauw Town Hall will be closed to the public as of May 1, 2026. Visits to the town hall will no longer be possible from that date until the renovation and restoration work is completed. According to the current schedule, this is expected to be by the end of 2028.
