Blue Flag for the beach in Wassenaar

Dutch beaches and marinas are once again setting the standard for quality and sustainability this year: in 2026, the Blue Flag will fly at 195 locations—143 marinas and 52 beaches. The municipality of Wassenaar was also awarded the Blue Flag once again. The official presentation took place in early May in Hoorn, at the municipal marina.

A beach to be proud of

For the sixteenth time, Wassenaar has been awarded the Blue Flag for the entire 8-kilometer stretch of beach between The Hague and Katwijk. This means that Wassenaar’s beach is once again among the most beautiful and cleanest in the Netherlands.

Since May 12, the Blue Flag has once again been flying proudly at De Wassenaarse Slag. In the presence of colleagues from the management and field staff, as well as representatives from G. van der Holst en Zn and Provalu, Alderman van Doeveren raised the prestigious Blue Flag. The parties involved have worked hard to earn this award, including by keeping the beach clean and well-maintained.

A sustainable path for the beach and nature

The Alderman proud of the Blue Flag: “It is important to us that the Wassenaar coastline is sustainable and attractive. That is why we have it assessed by third parties such as the Blue Flag. I am proud of everyone who has worked hard to achieve this. For us, this recognition is not only an acknowledgment of what we do, but also a guide for the sustainable development of the beach and coastline. At the same time, we are deeply committed to nature and the experience of nature. Together with the municipality of The Hague, we are taking steps toward the Green Beach Pennant, the certification for sustainable and nature-friendly beach management.”

Excellent water quality

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized certification for beaches and marinas that meet strict requirements in the areas of the environment and sustainability, education, maintenance, facilities, and safety. The fact that an increasing number of locations in the Netherlands are earning this certification demonstrates that municipalities and businesses are actively committed to creating a clean, safe, and responsible recreational environment. An important requirement for obtaining the Blue Flag is that water quality must be up to standard. The strictest standard from the European Bathing Water Directive is applied here.
