If you want to cut down a tree, you need to apply for an environmental permit. You also need a permit if you want to heavily take the crown of a tree.

Always consult with local residents first to see if they object to the tree being cut down.

Through Omgevingsloket you can find out if you need to apply for a permit. You can submit your application digitally right away.

What to do

  • Always consult with local residents first to see if they object to the tree being cut down.
  • Use Omgevingsloket to check whether you need a permit.
  • If it turns out that you need a permit, you can apply for it directly with your DigiD (individuals) or eHerkenning (companies).

Please indicate in your application:

  • what kind of tree is involved
  • where the tree stands
  • Whether one or more trees are involved
  • how you want to approach felling
  • why you want to cut down the tree
  • Whether you can replant the tree on your own property
  • If the tree is diseased, attach a statement from an arborist.

Additional information

To cut down trees covered by the Nature Protection Act, you must file a felling notification. These include trees outside built-up areas. You can find more information at the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RvO).

  • No cutting, felling, uprooting or large-scale pruning is allowed during the period March 15 to May 15 (bird breeding season) under the Nature Protection Act, unless it is emergency felling (safety comes into play).
  • At all times, you must maintain the duty of care for plants and animals. This means that you must not harm living plants and animals, nests and habitats. This also applies in your backyard.
  • The felling must not violate the Nature Protection Act. You can demonstrate this through a quikscan and/or further investigation of flora and fauna and applies to locations outside built-up areas.
