Extra Focus on Safe Bike Lanes as the School Year Begins
With the start of the new school year approaching, the municipality is paying extra attention to the safety of bike paths. Due to the ongoing drought and the growth of tree roots, pavement may be lifting or becoming loose in some places. This can lead to unsafe conditions for cyclists, especially on bike paths.
Inspections and Repairs
To ensure that cyclists can use the bike paths safely, additional inspections have been carried out recently. Where necessary, repair work was undertaken immediately. To this end, three teams of pavers were deployed to conduct expedited inspections of the main bike paths and make repairs where needed.
A large portion of the work has now been completed. Over the coming week, the remaining major bike routes will be inspected. These routes are expected to be inspected and repaired where necessary by the end of next week.
Safe Routes to School
Alderman Wendy Frigge, Director of Mobility, emphasizes the importance of a safe cycling environment, especially with the start of the new school year: “Many children and teenagers will soon be cycling to school every day again. That’s why it’s important that our bike paths are safe and in good condition. With these additional inspections and repairs, we’re ensuring that cyclists can use our bike paths as safely as possible.”
Report Incidents
The municipality continues to monitor the situation. Residents who encounter an unsafe situation on a bike path or elsewhere in a public space can report it via Outdoor Reports | Wassenaar or directly through the Buiten Beter app.
