The Municipality of Wassenaar Will Allow Fireworks Exemptions During the 2026–2027 New Year's Eve Celebrations

The municipality of Wassenaar will grant fireworks exemptions for organized local initiatives by associations and foundations. Starting with the upcoming New Year’s Eve, a nationwide ban on the setting off of consumer fireworks by private individuals will take effect. This is regulated by the Safe New Year’s Eve Act. Setting off F1 fireworks, for example, will still be permitted.

The nationwide fireworks ban remains the guiding principle when granting fireworks exemptions. At the same time, the municipality of Wassenaar believes it is desirable to allow limited scope for organized local initiatives that can take place safely, responsibly, and in a controlled manner under Requirements .

Mayor Leendert de Lange: “We want to provide that space for organized local initiatives. But it must be possible to do so safely, responsibly, and in a manageable way. In this way, we’re striking a balance that supports the initiatives valued and supported in our village, while ensuring we don’t compromise what’s also important during New Year’s Eve: celebrating in a festive and enjoyable way, so that everyone can start the new year healthy and safe.”

With the fireworks exemption, associations and foundations with a demonstrable local connection to the municipality of Wassenaar may set off 200 kg of Category F2 decorative fireworks at a location that is easily accessible to emergency services and where the public must remain at a safe distance.
The fireworks exemption can be requested via www.wassenaar.nl. Associations and foundations will be informed about the applicable procedures and deadlines.
