The Municipality of Wassenaar is auctioning off part of its art collection

Careful management of the art collection

The municipality has an extensive collection, but lacks the space and capacity to store, manage, and exhibit all of the artworks. For this reason, it has been decided to dispose of a limited portion of the collection. 

A Selection That Reflects Wassenaar's Values

The selection of the artworks was made based on the recommendation of an external art historian. A group of art experts from Wassenaar then reviewed the selection. This ensured that no artworks with a special historical or cultural connection to Wassenaar would be auctioned. Following this selection, a significant portion of the municipal art collection will be retained.

"Our art collection tells the story of Wassenaar. That is why we have taken great care in selecting the works to be auctioned. With this step, we are ensuring that the collection is managed properly and sustainably, while the proceeds will be used for the preservation and restoration of artworks that will remain part of the municipal collection." 

Proceeds for Preservation and Restoration

The proceeds from the auction will first be used to cover the costs of the deaccessioning process. The remaining amount will be invested in the municipal art collection, with a special focus on the restoration and preservation of the artworks that remain part of the collection.

Auction Dates and More Information

The artworks will be available for viewing online starting August 27 at www.venduehuis.com and . Bidding opens on Monday, August 31, at 10:00 a.m. The auction closes on Thursday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m. 

In addition, all works will be on display during the viewing days from Thursday, September 10, through Sunday, September 13, daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Venduehuis Den Haag, located at Nobelstraat 5 in The Hague.
