More and more gulls are found in Dutch villages and cities. They like to nest on roofs and look for food in the area. Unfortunately, they can cause nuisance in the process. The nuisance occurs during the breeding season, from April to August.

What to do

The municipality needs your help to reduce the nuisance. To do this, you can do the following.

Do not feed birds

Only during a harsh winter are some birds helped by some extra food. Gulls are perfectly capable of finding their own food. Thus, with spring in sight, it is no longer necessary to feed birds extra. By no longer feeding you prevent the supply of easy food to gulls.

Make nesting sites on roofs inaccessible

Homeowners can do even more to prevent nuisance gulls. For example, you can make the roof inaccessible. By doing so, you can prevent gulls from nesting on roofs. For example, you can place pins, wires or nets on the roof.

Additional Information

Nature Protection Act

When taking additional measures, do pay attention to the Nature Conservancy Act. Gulls are wild birds. They are legally protected animals. Based on the Nature Protection Act, it is prohibited to kill, wound, capture or intentionally disturb gulls.

Because gulls are protected animals, the municipality may not take direct action against them. An exemption to the Nature Protection Act can only be requested from the Ministry of EL&I in the case of a serious damage to public health.

What does the congregation do?

The municipality's goal is to inform residents and housing associations about the gulls. In addition, the municipality follows the developments of possibilities to limit the nuisance -within the limits of the Nature Protection Act.
