Schools play a key role in making Wassenaar more sustainable—not only by saving energy, but also by serving as a source of inspiration for students and the entire community. The municipality is happy to support school boards in implementing sustainability measures, both large and small.

Get started right away

Even without major investments, your school can already achieve a great deal. Practical measures that yield immediate results:

  • Adjust the heating and ventilation to match the school's hours of operation
  • Regular maintenance of ventilation systems (replacing filters)
  • Replace outdated equipment with energy-efficient alternatives (refrigerators, computers, coffee makers)
  • Implementing Energy-Efficient LED Lighting
  • Installing Thermostatic Valves and Energy Monitoring Systems
  • Encourage behavioral changes among both the team and students: turn off computers and projectors, close windows and doors, and set the heat to level 2–3

Get involved in sustainability initiatives

There are national programs that schools can join directly:

Sustainability in the Classroom

Sustainability also has a place in education itself. Through GroenGelinkt ( ), you’ll find a wide range of teaching materials on energy, climate, and sustainability—for every grade level. The local library is also currently working on a sustainability program.

Collaborating with the municipality

The municipality is actively collaborating with school boards to Map potential savings in Map and turn them into concrete results. Is your school interested in getting started? Please contact us at energietransitie@wassenaar.nl.
