Garden and Surroundings
The climate is changing, and we’re all noticing it. Heat waves, droughts, and extreme rainstorms are becoming more common. But you can do something about it! By adding greenery to your garden, roof, or balcony, you can make your home more climate-resilient and a more pleasant place to live.
Why more green spaces?
More plants and fewer tiles offer significant benefits:
- Greenery absorbs rainwater and prevents flooding
- Plants provide shade and coolness during hot summers
- Greenery attracts insects, birds, and other animals
- Planting helps improve air quality and reduce environmental noise
- Nature in your immediate surroundings reduces stress and is good for your health
A green roof
A green roof keeps your home cool and collects rainwater. A sedum roof with low-growing succulents is lightweight, requires little maintenance, and is suitable for many homes. Be sure to check first whether your roof structure can support the weight. You can find more information and tips at Milieu Centraal.
Green garden, patio or balcony
Does water pool after a downpour? Or does your yard turn into a baking hot surface in the summer? By replacing pavers with greenery, you give rainwater room to drain away. A rain barrel or underground water collection system also helps. You can find helpful inspiration and tips on Milieu Centraal, Groene Tuinen, and Steenbreek.
