Did you know that the average car is idle 90% of the time? That’s a waste of space, money, and the environment. Car sharing is the smart alternative: cheaper, more sustainable, and more flexible than owning a car. And in Wassenaar, there are plenty of options!
Why car sharing?
- Cost-effective. You only pay for what you actually use—no insurance, vehicle tax, maintenance, or unexpected repair costs. Do you have a second car that you only use occasionally? In that case, a car-sharing service is often a more affordable option. Calculate your own car costs using NIBUD at or the ANWB calculator at .
- Travel worry-free. You can easily reserve a car through an app—whether well in advance or at the last minute. Electric shared cars are suitable for both short and longer trips, so you’ll hardly ever need to charge while on the road.
- A sustainable choice. Every shared car replaces several idle cars. Fewer cars on the street mean lower CO₂ emissions, less use of raw materials, and more space in the neighborhood.
- Smart Car Sharing Wassenaar. In Wassenaar, you can join Smart Car Sharing Wassenaar, a group of enthusiastic Wassenaar residents who share electric cars with their neighbors. The shared cars are located at four spots in the municipality: at the Warenar, on Donker Curtiusstraat (Wassenaar Noord), in the parking lot by the pharmacy in Kerkehout, and on Rozenplein. Electric Driving and Charging
Electric driving is growing rapidly, and Wassenaar is keeping pace! The municipality is providing a robust network of public charging stations so that residents without their own driveways can also drive electric vehicles. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about applications, rates, and smart initiatives.
Request a Public Charging Station
Do you own an electric car or plug-in hybrid but don't have a way to charge it at home? If so , you can request a public charging station at laadpaalnodig.nl/wassenaar.
You are eligible if you:
- Lives or works in Wassenaar
- Does not have its own parking lot or parking garage for charging
- There are no charging stations within a 200-meter walking distance
- Owns (or has ordered or leased) a fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle
- A parking permit is valid if the location is within a paid parking zone
- Drives at least 10,000 km per year on electric power (approximately 2,000 kWh per year)
A charging station will be installed as soon as a local resident submits a request and it meets municipal policy requirements. Until a charging station is installed, the parking spaces remain available to everyone as usual.

Rates
- SGZH 2.0 (new contract): €0.48 per kWh (including VAT) — effective January 1, 2025
- SGZH 1.0 (old contract): €0.39 per kWh

Malfunctions
Is there a problem with a charging station? Call the 24/7 service hotline: 088 – 369 29 14 (please provide the charging station number). In many cases, the issue can be resolved remotely right away.
Please note: Do not place charging cables on the sidewalk
In Wassenaar, it is not permitted to lay charging cables across the sidewalk or public road. Are you charging on your own property? In that case, you are, of course, allowed to install your own charging station there.
