Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

To reduce the number of victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, new legislation came into effect on April 1, 2023: the legal CO system. From that date, only CO-free certified companies are allowed to perform work on a gas combustion system. Hiring a non-certified company or doing DIY work on a gas combustion plant is prohibited from that date.

Certified companies to be found in registry

CO-free certified companies can be recognized by the CO-free logo and can be found in the 'register of gas combustion plants'. An installer also carries (digital) credentials with him or her that show he or she is working for a certified company. Companies that are not in the register after April 1, 2023, may no longer perform work on gas combustion installations until they obtain CO-free certification.

Carbon monoxide poisoning

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a life-threatening gas. You can't smell, taste or see it, but people who inhale it can suffer serious health problems and even die. Annually, carbon monoxide poisoning causes 10 to 20 deaths and at least 200 hospitalizations. Often, carbon monoxide enters a home through an improperly installed or maintained gas combustion system, such as a central heating boiler, geyser, gas stove, gas fireplace or flue. This was revealed by research conducted by the Dutch Safety Board (OvV). The new legislation was therefore made on the recommendation of the OvV.
