Advisory Committee - Wassenaar Environmental Quality (OKW).

What does the advisory committee do?

The Wassenaar Environmental Quality Advisory Committee (OKW, formerly WCE) is an advisory body that advises the mayor and aldermen on construction plans in the municipality of Wassenaar. Its members are independent experts, each with their own area of expertise. The committee has one citizen member. This member is appointed to represent the public’s perspective on aesthetics and heritage. The OKW Advisory Committee evaluates building plans against the quality criteria set forth in the Wassenaar Aesthetics and Visual Quality Handbook. It not only provides advice on “standard” building plans, such as renovations or the construction of a new home. It is also consulted on urban development projects, such as new residential neighborhoods, and in the formulation of the Wassenaar Environmental Plan. The Municipal Executive also seeks advice from the OKW Advisory Committee regarding changes to cultural heritage. This includes national and municipal monuments, landmark buildings, historic country estates, and the nationally protected village view. In addition, the administration seeks advice on cultural-historical aspects regarding non-monuments, such as new construction within the protected village landscape or in cultural landscapes.

Welfare procedure

Permit applications and preliminary consultation cases are always first reviewed to ensure the completeness of the submitted information and compliance with the Environmental Plan. If the plan meets the requirements, it may be submitted to the Advisory Committee for review.

Meetings

The Advisory Committee’s meetings are open to the public and are held at the Municipal Office at Johan de Wittstraat 45, Wassenaar. During the meeting, you, as the applicant or an interested party, may explain the building application or present your views. If you wish to do so, you must indicate this in your application. Because the meetings are open to the public, you may attend without the right to speak; you do not need to register for this. If you wish to speak (briefly) as an interested party, you must notify the secretary in advance. For further information about the work of the Advisory Committee, please contact the committee’s secretary, Hugo Schut, at HSchut@wassenaar.nl
