Cultural heritage policy

Wassenaar has a rich history. Much of this has been visibly preserved in the form of parks, public gardens, farms, churches, mansions and residential neighborhoods. Heritage contributes to the identity and recognizability of the municipality. It makes Wassenaar an attractive municipality and is the most important ingredient of Wassenaar's strong brand as "Country Estate by the Sea". It is important to deal carefully with the cultural-historical valuable heritage so that future generations can also enjoy it to the fullest. How we do that is in the Heritage Vision Wassenaar 2018-2024; towards a heritage care for all. To realize the vision, the Wassenaar Cultural Heritage Program 2018 - 2024 has been adopted.

The "Heritage Vision Wassenaar 2018-2024; towards a heritage care for all" describes how Wassenaar - municipality and residents together - will preserve, protect and further develop its heritage over the next six years. The policy rests on six pillars:

  1. Careful handling of our heritage
  2. Vitality and sustainability
  3. Chain in order
  4. Significance of heritage for the living environment.
  5. Heritage as a strong brand
  6. Working together

The vision was created together with owners, heritage users and other interested parties. Ideas and wishes were collected in various ways. For example, residents could make a heritage wish list. These are summarized on the heritage wish list. The basis for drafting the new heritage policy is the Startnotitie Erfgoedbeleid 2018 - 2024.

Heritage Ordinance

The Wassenaar Heritage Ordinance 2016 defines how the protection of cultural-historical values takes place. Examples include the designation of municipal monuments, the Requirements that can be set for cultural-historical and archaeological research, or advising when modifying a monument. The Welfare and Cultural Heritage Commission advises the municipality on the protection and handling of heritage.

Protected heritage

Valuable heritage can be protected in various ways. The best known are the national monuments. There are also the municipal monuments and the objects that define the image. In addition to built monuments, there are also archaeological monuments.
