Culture Note
The 2017-2020 cultural policy is coming to an end. Therefore, the municipality is currently working on a new cultural policy document: Rich in Culture Wassenaar 2021. The current memorandum is a draft. Residents and institutions can still submit their views before the municipal council makes a decision and the note becomes final.
Draft Culture Note
Wassenaar is rich in arts and culture and we want to keep it that way. The draft Rijk aan Cultuur 2021 Culture Memorandum proposes policies that focus on:
- Strengthening the local cultural infrastructure. Cooperation between cultural organizations, education and social partners will be pursued. The Cultural Anchor Wassenaar is the umbrella structure within which cooperation is stimulated and exchange is made possible.
- Participation of specific target groups. Special attention and effort is devoted to cultural education for youth. This also applies to 'internationals', status holders and people with disabilities. Culture offers them an important entrance to participate in society.
- Greater visibility of cultural wealth. Wassenaar can be found in different places and ways. Digitally, through social media, or the newspaper. The availability of information about cultural offerings is important on the one hand for the visibility of the providers of culture. On the other hand for the findability for the cultural user.
The ambitions of the paper are neither sky-high nor cast in cement. In the current circumstances, it is not only a desire to be able to respond to current events and to have and make room for new ideas and initiatives. It is also a hard necessity. Indeed, this paper was drafted in corona time with varying degrees of restricted freedoms and lockdowns. This has a huge impact on the activities, which in normal circumstances can be carried out almost without a second thought.

Decision-making process and participation
A starting memorandum marked the beginning of the process to arrive at a new culture memorandum. This starting memorandum was adopted at the May 20, 2020 council meeting. The memorandum addressed the principles, frameworks, roles and planning for the cultural note. To gather input for the memorandum, a questionnaire was submitted to the cultural field, among others. A meeting was also organized. Because of corona, probably not everyone who wanted to was able to participate in this meeting. For this reason, the council decided at its meeting on January 26,, to release the Draft Culture Note 'Rich in Culture' for public participation. Thus, anyone who wants to can still submit an opinion. The views will be included in the final memorandum.
This means that the memo will come back to the council for final adoption once again, after the public comment period is over and responses have been incorporated.
Submitting views
The concept note will be available for public inspection for six weeks from February 12, 2021 at the Customer Contact Center in the municipal office at Johan de Wittstraat 45 in Wassenaar. The concept can also be viewed at the bottom of this page. During the public consultation period anyone can submit views to the Municipal Executive of Wassenaar, preferably via cultuurnota@wassenaar.nl or in writing to Postbus 499, 2240 AL Wassenaar. It is also possible to submit oral views. For this, an appointment should be made by telephone via telephone number 14070, preferably no later than one week before the end of the period for public inspection.
After this date, the processing of the views will take place and the Culture Note will be submitted to the City Council for final decision-making.
Implementation Program
In addition to the draft Culture Note, there is also an implementation program Culture Note Wassenaar 2021-2024. This contains the concrete action points for the period 2021-2024. This implementation program concerns the authority of the college. The implementation program is not part of the public consultation. Therefore, you cannot submit an opinion on it.
