Hold demonstration or protest action

In the Netherlands, anyone may organize a demonstration or protest. This is a fundamental right. If you want to demonstrate in a public place, report this to the municipality at least 4 days (4 x 24 hours) in advance. This way an assessment can be made in time to see if measures are needed. For example, for traffic and safety.

How does it work?

It is important that the demonstration does not disrupt public order or endanger the safety of citizens. Therefore, consult in advance with the municipality, the police and possibly the fire department. They provide, for example, crowd barriers and road closures, first aid and, if necessary, guidance by officers.

When may the municipality prohibit a demonstration?

  • You reported your demonstration late to the municipality.
  • You did not provide the municipality with the required information in time.
  • In the interest of traffic and road safety.
  • To prevent rioting and aggression.
  • To protect health.

The content of a demonstration should never be the reason for a restriction or ban.
