Cycling route between Wassenaar and Leiden will remain open during WarmtelinQ construction work

The construction of the WarmtelinQ network within Leiden’s municipal boundaries will require major work along certain sections of the route. This work may affect the bicycle path along Ommedijkseweg between Wassenaar and Leiden. For the municipality of Wassenaar, one principle is paramount: cyclists must be able to continue using a safe bicycle route between Wassenaar and Leiden during the construction work.

Accessibility remains the guiding principle

In collaboration with the province, the municipalities of Leiden and Katwijk, and WarmtelinQ, work is underway to develop a solution that ensures accessibility for cyclists and other road users. Various scenarios are being explored and discussed, including temporary bike routes and alternatives that maintain connectivity during the construction work.

Alderman Wendy Frigge, Mobility Officer, emphasizes: “We believe it is important that the bike route between Wassenaar and Leiden remains open during the WarmtelinQ construction work, so that Wassenaar remains accessible to residents and visitors.”

Looking for the best solution

The parties involved have been in discussions about this for some time. These discussions will resume in September to arrive at the best possible scenario for cyclists and other road users. In this regard, both Wassenaar and Leiden have specifically emphasized the importance of traffic safety, ease of use, lighting, and public safety along any potential detour routes.

Engaging in active dialogue with the parties involved

The construction work and the potential road closure area are located outside the jurisdiction of the municipality of Wassenaar, within the territory of the municipality of Leiden. The final decision regarding the organization of the construction work and the chosen detour route therefore rests with the municipality of Leiden. Wassenaar will, however, remain in active dialogue with all parties involved and will vigorously advocate for the interests of its residents.

The municipality understands that residents have questions about the plans and takes these concerns seriously. As soon as there is more clarity regarding the final approach, residents will be provided with further information.
