Remembrance Route and Discovery Tour Valkenburg Airport

In 2018, the municipalities of Katwijk and Wassenaar prepared an Integral Spatial Exploration (IRV), see pdf at the bottom of the page, for the area between the A44 and the dunes and between the N206 provincial road and the northern edge of Wassenaar. It includes cultural and historical elements that are of value for the further development of the area. They must provide more cohesion between the residential area to be newly built on and around the former airbase, the Mient Kooltuin, the Valkenburg Lake and the Green Zone. To elaborate these, different themes are integrally linked. Cultural heritage is one theme.
Remembrance route Valkenburg airport
Valkenburg airfield developed from 1939 as a military airfield and played an important role in particular during the early days of World War II and during the Cold War. Therefore, to experience the military historical story of Valkenburg Airfield, a new bicycle route was unveiled in the fall of 2020: Remembrance Route Valkenburg Airfield. This bicycle route of about 14 kilometers leads past historical sites such as the barracks camp, the old tank ditch and a piece of the Atlantic Wall. The route starts at the entrance to the De Pan van Persijn ('Panbos'). Along the route there are also a number of information boards. You can download the bicycle route at the bottom of this page.
Valkenburg airport discovery tour
The memorial route has been enriched with the special Discovery Tour of Valkenburg Airport, especially for children. This tour leads past places around Valkenburg airfield, but also past the village center of Valkenburg where special events took place. What makes this route extra fun is the questionnaire (see the form and answer sheet at the bottom of this page) that children can fill out during the tour.
If you want more information about the creation of the memorial route and the discovery tour, you can find more information in the pdf documents at the bottom of this page. The bicycle brochure can be picked up at Raadhuis De Paauw, the municipal office and the library or download it at the bottom of this page as a pdf document.
