Renovation and Sustainability Improvements at De Warenar
The De Warenar Cultural Center at 75 Kerkstraat is a major gathering place in Wassenaar. For many years, the theater, community center activities, and other social and cultural programs have played a central role in the cultural and social life of the village.
Ensuring future-proofing
The municipality of Wassenaar wants to preserve De Warenar and prepare it for the future. That is why, on September 22, 2025, the city council approved an investment in the renovation, sustainability upgrades, and repurposing of the building. The goal is to develop De Warenar into an accessible and future-proof cultural center that brings together multiple functions, such as:
- the theater;
- cultural and educational activities;
- social gatherings and community center activities;
- possibly a museum function.
Renovation and sustainability improvements
The plans focus on renovating the historic building, addressing overdue maintenance, and implementing sustainability measures. This will result in a better indoor environment, lower energy costs, and a building that will last for many years to come.
In 2026, work will continue on further developing the plans, including the program of requirements and the design.
Schedule (subject to change)
- Preparatory phase: 2026–2027
- Start of implementation: expected by the end of 2027
- Completion: early 2029
During the construction work, we will explore how to ensure that De Warenar—and in particular its theater functions—can continue to operate as smoothly as possible.
With this approach, De Warenar will continue to be a vibrant place where culture, community, and social activities come together for all residents of Wassenaar.
