Youth mental health care is mental health care for children up to the age of 18 (and in certain cases up to 23). It involves children who have mental problems that impair their development. Examples include:

  • autism
  • ADHD
  • addiction
  • depression

Youth mental health care aims to remedy these problems or prevent them from getting worse.

If you have a child who needs help you report this to the municipality. The municipality will work with you to see what help your child can get. In some cases, you must first make an application to receive the help.

How does it work?

  • The district may offer treatments at home or on site, such as at a school. Sometimes it is also done at a clinic. For example, by having your child receive treatment at the clinic during the day. Or by admitting your child to the clinic for a certain amount of time.
  • The municipality may also allow your child to take a course. This is especially suitable for children with mild psychological problems.
  • The municipality can also give you a personal budget. You can then purchase the help for your child yourself from the institution of your choice.

What to do

  • You report to the municipality that help is needed with your child's mental health problems.
  • You give the municipality all the information needed to determine what help your child will receive.
  • You have a conversation with the municipality and experts about your child's situation.
  • You indicate what you need help with.

A few days after the interview, you will receive a report from the municipality. This states whether you can get help and if so, what kind. It is possible that you will need to apply for help first. You will receive a form from the municipality for this.

How long does it take?

General help you can usually get right away. If you have applied for youth mental health care, you will be notified as soon as possible whether you will receive the help. This never takes longer than 8 weeks.
