Reception of asylum seekers Duinrell

Extending reception of asylum seekers Duinrell estate until March 12, 2028

There is still an acute shortage of regular reception places for asylum seekers in the Netherlands and (crisis) emergency accommodation must be used. Therefore, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) has submitted a request to the municipality of Wassenaar to extend the reception period for asylum seekers at Duinrell Estate until March 12, 2028. Partly based on the good cooperation with COA and Duinrell and inspired by past experiences, the Municipal Executive is in favor of this. 

Positive and good cooperation

The municipality of Wassenaar, COA and Duinrell have been working together since 2007 when it comes to temporary winter accommodation of asylum seekers on Duinrell estate. Currently, COA is again using part of the Duinrell estate for reception of asylum seekers until March 12, 2028. In recent years there has been good cooperation between the municipality, COA and Duinrell.

Mayor Leendert de Lange: "In the summer of 2020, the extension of the reception during the summer went well. We are proud that in this way Wassenaar can once again make a nice contribution to solving the current asylum reception crisis. In which all parties will do their utmost to make the reception as good and safe as possible. It is great to see that involved residents help teach language lessons, learn to ride a bike or accompany a game of soccer. This creates mutual connection and support."

The municipality has made additional agreements with COA. For example, only promising asylum seekers are placed or people who are already permit holders (status holders) awaiting housing.

Surveillance and security

COA and the municipality are taking measures to ensure security at the site and in the surrounding area. For example, there is 24-hour security from Duinrell and COA employees are present during the day. There is close cooperation and frequent consultation with the police and a permanent neighborhood police officer is involved in the reception area.
