Passport
You apply for a passport at the municipality by appointment. After 6 working days, you can also pick up your passport by appointment.
Rush request
If you need your passport quickly, make an urgent application this is possible without an appointment. If you request the passport before 12:00 noon, you can usually pick it up the next business day. Please keep in mind our business hours. You do have to pay extra for an urgent application.
How does it work?
How long is my passport valid?
- Passport 18 years or older: 10 years
- Passport up to 17 years of age: 5 years
- Business Passport: 10 years
- Second passport: 2 years
Business Passport
If you travel often (for example, for work), you can apply for a business passport. This is a normal passport, but has twice as many pages for stamps.
Second passport
You can apply for a second passport if you:
- Travel to different countries for which you need to apply for a visa
- visiting countries in conflict with each other.
If you wish to apply for a second passport, the following Requirements apply:
- Your current passport is still valid for at least 6 months.
- You can prove that you need the second passport.
What to do
- You apply for a passport in person at the municipality.
- Bring all travel documents in your possession to the appointment, even if they are expired and not declared invalid.
- When you apply for a passport for your child, bring your child with you.
- Your passport will include your fingerprints. Health for clean fingers.
- Children under 12 do not need to be fingerprinted.
- You pick up your passport in person.
- When you pick up a passport for your child, bring your child with you.
- If you want to keep your old passport, you must specifically ask for it. Otherwise, your old passport will be destroyed.
Physical or intellectual disability
If a physical or mental disability prevents you from applying for a passport in person, a municipality employee may come to you. If in doubt, the municipality will ask you for a medical certificate.
If a temporary physical disability prevents you from getting fingerprinted, you will get a passport that is valid for 1 year. If your disability is permanent, you will get a passport that is valid for 10 years.
Passport lost or stolen
- If your passport is lost or stolen in the Netherlands, immediately provide the Declaration of Missing.
- You can also tell the desk during the application. You do not have to report it to the police.
- If you have insurance against theft, reporting it to the police is recommended, however.
- If you need to travel immediately, you can request an emergency passport from the Royal Military Police.
- If you find your old passport, you are required to turn it in to the municipality. This is because this passport is no longer valid.
- If you lose your passport abroad, report it to the local police. Ask for written proof of this. You will need this for your insurance. In the Netherlands you do not have to report it to the Dutch police.
- Report to the Dutch embassy or consulate that your passport has been lost or stolen and request an emergency passport.
What do I need?
- A good-looking passport photo that is no older than 6 months at the time of application and meets the passport photo requirements.
- All passports and identity cards you still have, even if they have expired.
- When you apply for a second passport, bring proof that you need the second passport.
- Debit card or cash. You pay directly at the time of application.
Children up to 18 years of age
Minor children who wish to apply for a travel document require the permission of the person(s) in charge of custody.
Consent is required in the following situations:
- A child under the age of 12 when applying for an identity card;
- A child under 18 when applying for a passport;
- An adult who is under guardianship
Who should sign? Claimant(s):
- Both parents if they have joint custody (Note! Also if the parents are divorced unless otherwise determined by the court);
- Mother, when she has sole parental authority;
- Father, when he alone is entrusted with parental authority;
- The body exercising authority;
- Use the written consent form fromthe municipality for this purpose. You both can also sign on the spot, in which case you do not need to bring a completed form.
- Valid identification documents (not a copy) from both parents or the person with custody of the child.
- As the parent with custody of the child, are you not coming with us to the application appointment? Please sign the online consent form in advance using DigiD.
- Children must be present in person when applying for and collecting their passports.
- At least one parent or guardian must be present at the time of application.
- A good-looking passport photo not older than 6 months at the time of application. This passport photo meets the passport photo requirements.
- All passports and ID cards you still have of your child, even if they have expired.
- Debit card or cash. You pay directly at the time of application.
Traveling with children
- Children must have their own travel documents and may no longer be credited in their parents' passports.
- If you are traveling abroad with your child and you have a different last name from your child, you will need proof that you are the father or mother or have parental authority.

How long does it take?
You can pick up your passport after 6 working days and within 3 months you should pick up your passport. If you made an urgent application in the morning, you can usually pick up your passport the next business day.
If you no longer have your old passport and you have no other proof of identity, the municipality conducts research to determine your identity. As a result, it may take longer for you to get your passport.
Additional information
- If you are not a Dutch national, you may be eligible for a Refugee Passport or an Alien Passport.
- If you are under guardianship, you need permission from the guardian to apply for a passport.
- If you change your name, you must apply for a new passport.
- If you change gender, you must apply for a new passport.
Applying from abroad
Dutch citizens living abroad can obtain a passport from a large number of Dutch representations, such as consulates and embassies. Or at one of the border municipalities in the Netherlands. Such an application involves many different documents.

Travel to the United Kingdom (UK)
The Dutch Map does not count as a travel document for the UK. This applies to:
