Side load waste collection

Wassenaar Municipality is switching to a different method of garbage collection. The garbage truck that collects your trash will get a new loading system.
New loading system: side loading
With side loading, the mini-containers are no longer emptied by hand at the back of the collection truck. The cart drives past the minicontainers ready at the street side, picks them up with a "mechanical" arm on the side of the cart and empties them. The minicontainers are then returned to the offered spot. In this way, fewer employees are needed per cart and we can empty more mini-containers per day. In addition, the mechanical arm improves the workload, resulting in healthy and sustainable employment of Avalex employees. The vacant jobs will be filled in a different way. For example, employees are deployed as raw materials coaches or as drivers (loaders) in the areas where the number of households is increasing. Through this new working method we also save costs. With these cost savings we keep the waste disposal charges for you as low as possible.
The side loading system works almost automatically. This requires the containers to be in a neat row along the sidewalk (see offering instructions at the bottom of this page). Therefore, a presentation site is assigned for each residence, in the process trying to make as few changes to the outdoor space as possible. In case of an unclear spot or spot with less space, it is possible that it will be marked with a sign and/or lines.
Introduce step by step
The side loading system will be introduced gradually. This means that we will switch to side loading per part of Wassenaar and not everywhere at once throughout Wassenaar. By 2024, the side-loading vehicle has already been successfully introduced in the first three neighborhoods de Paauw, Oud Wassenaar and Drie Papegaaien.
New drop-off locations for trash
At some houses, the place where the containers should be on collection day changes. We try to choose a logical spot everywhere. All spots comply with special rules and where possible they are clustered. This allows the grab arm to pick up two containers at the same time. It is important that your spot is as close to your home as possible. This is not always possible because some streets have limited space.

Walk-in evenings
Therefore, on September 25 and October 24, 2023, we organized a walk-in evening in the company restaurant of the Municipal Office in Wassenaar. During this walk-in evening residents could give their opinion or make a suggestion.

After incorporating initial feedback and suggestions from the walk-in evenings, a draft decision was realized (see Maps and tables at the bottom of this page).
Based on the draft decision, an opinion procedure was started in the period from May 9, 2025 to June 20, 2025 for the districts De Kieviet, Duindigt and Groenendaal,Nieuw-Wassenaar and Klingenbosch. During this period residents have another opportunity to submit an opinion.
Residents were informed of this by letter no later than May 9, 2025.
All views are considered (in person) and processed, resulting in a college proposal and, consequently, a final designation decision for each area.

After the viewpoint procedure, on March 12, 2024, by means of a college proposal, all offer locations were established by means of an appointment decision. You can download the designation decisions at the bottom of the page. In the designation decision we also explain how you can appeal to the Council of State, should you disagree with the designation decision.
You can find the presentation location of your container for each neighborhood in the designation decree. The delivery location is indicated by a red dot on a Map of your neighborhood. Depending on the situation, it is possible that your location does not or hardly differ from the current situation.
How does it proceed after that?
After full implementation of side loading in the neighborhoods De Kieviet, Duindigt and Groenendaal, Nieuw-Wassenaar and Klingenbosch, the process will be continued in the remaining neighborhoods. As soon as it is your neighborhood's turn, you will be informed by letter. For interim updates and more information about side loading, please keep an eye on our website.
