Greenery on and around your home

The climate is changing. Heat, drought and extreme rain showers are becoming more common. You can adapt your home and garden to these changes by making your yard greener (fewer tiles), getting a green roof or collecting rainwater.

The benefits of more greenery (plantings):

  • greenery absorbs rainwater;
  • greenery provides shade and coolness during increasingly hot summers;
  • greenery is good for insects, birds and other animals;
  • greenery provides cleaner air and dampens ambient noise;
  • Greenery reduces stress and is good for health.

Green roof

A green roof keeps your home cool in the summer and absorbs rainwater. If you want to build a roof garden, have a study done to see if your roof structure can support the weight. A roof with low plants (a sedum roof) weighs less and requires little maintenance.

Green garden, patio or balcony

How is it in your garden, patio or balcony? Does the water stand when it has rained hard? Is it too hot on a summer day because the sun shines on your garden all day? By replacing some tiles with greenery, you give the water room to flow away after a heavy rain. You can also collect rainwater in a rain barrel or underground.

A green municipality

The Groene Meent in Wassenaar is a residents' initiative. A number of volunteers together organize activities that contribute to a green community. In this way they want to inspire other residents to live greener. You can read more on the website of the Groene Meent. You can also report to them if you have an idea or would like to become a volunteer.
