Child care subsidies and other grants

Childcare allowance

Apply for childcare allowance through the Tax Office

You can apply for child care subsidies in these situations:

  • You and your partner work during the day.
  • You are taking a course.
  • You will receive benefits.
  • You are following a pathway to work.
  • You are taking an integration course.

How much allowance you get depends on your income, the number of children and the type of care.

In addition, the municipality of Wassenaar provides two subsidies that you may be eligible for: the preschool care subsidy and preschool education subsidy.

Surcharge affair

On our own website there is information about help for parents and children of the Surcharge Affair

Early childhood education grant

Sometimes it helps a child ages 2.5 to 4 to attend early childhood education. This is a special learning program within the child care setting that gives extra attention to language, social skills and exercise. Early childhood education is especially for children who need extra support. For example, toddlers with a language delay.

You will have an interview with Youth Health Care

During an interview with the Youth Health Care (JGZ) they will check whether your child can make use of pre-school education. JGZ issues an indication for this.

How is early childhood education paid for?

Early childhood education is 16 hours per week. The municipality of Wassenaar pays for the first eight hours in full. The second eight hours are reimbursed based on income. This is equal to the level of childcare allowance.

If you have a low income, the municipality of Wassenaar pays for much of the preschool education.

The subsidy is applied for by and paid to the child care provider. You will pay less childcare costs to the childcare provider as a result.

Preschool subsidy

Sometimes you are not eligible for child care benefits. For example, because you or your partner does not work. If your child is between 2.5 and 4 years of age, you can get a subsidy for eight hours per week for toddler care. The municipality of Wassenaar wants all children to develop as well as possible.

The subsidy depends on your income and follows the amount of child care subsidy. You apply for the subsidy through your child care provider. They offset the subsidy with you so you pay less.

Please note that this subsidy is for parents who do not have enough money to use child care. So consider whether you really need this subsidy.

Social Medical Indication (SMI).

Sometimes you cannot take care of your child for a while. For example, because you are sick or because something else is going on. You can then contact the Social Team.

A Social Team staff member will discuss with you whether there is a temporary solution to accommodate your child. For example, through your network or from the Social Team.

If this is not possible, you can sometimes use the municipality's Social Medical Indication (SMI) provision. The municipality will then temporarily pay the cost of child care. The Social Team can help you complete the application and collect the right documents. The municipality's SMI specialist will assess whether you actually qualify for the SMI provision.

In the case of SMI, there is often a co-payment. If your income is less than the income limit of 130% of the Social Minimum, you do not have to pay a co-payment.
